Say goodbye to rubbing and scrubbing while you attempt to remove stubborn mascara. Say goodbye to raccoon eyes after you wash your face. Say goodbye to red eyes and irritated skin caused by harsh makeup removers. And say hello to clean, clear skin. Because this works… really works!
The two ingredients in this simply DIY makeup remover instantly dissolves makeup, including waterproof mascara, while soothing the skin. Unlike some oil-based makeup removers, this won’t clog pores or cause breakouts.
This recipe is inspired by my experience with Enessa Lavender Makeup Remover, which contains jojoba oil, vitamin E oil, and lavender essential oil. Like the other Enessa products I’ve tried, I fell in love with this remover when I first tried it. This DIY version is quite similar and removes makeup like a charm.
Recently, I had theprivilege to write a post about The Top 8 Skincare Oils under the guidance of Michelle Ornstein, Enessa’s founder and THE expert in holistic skincare. Are you afraid of using oil on your skin? Don’t be! Here’s why. (Plus, I share an exclusive coupon code in the post for Enessa products, valid through December).
DIY Makeup Remover: The Star Ingredients
Jojoba Oil
- Interestingly, jojoba oil isn’t an oil, it’s aa liquid wax ester made from expeller-pressed jojoba seeds.
- It is the closest thing in nature to our own sebum. It doesn’t clog pores and it works perfectly for all skin types.
- Jojoba oil gently dissolves even stubborn makeup without irritating the skin or eyes.
- It soothes and moisturizes the skin.
- If you have oily skin, don’t be afraid to use skincare oils! Jojoba oil dissolves excess sebum, allowing the pores to breathe.
Vitamin E Oil
- A powerful antioxidant that helps protect the skin against damage and also protects the jojoba oil against oxidative damage.
- It soothes and moisturizes the skin.
- Make sure your vitamin E is GMO-free! These vitamin E capsules are perfect for this recipe and are GMO-free.
How to store your DIY Makeup Remover
You know that annoying saying, Do as I say, not as I do? Yeah, do that.
Because light can damage and oxidize (rancidify) the jojoba oil and vitamin E, do not store this in a clear glass jar. I put the makeup remover in a clear jar for the pictures, because it looks pretty and I wanted to show the golden color. I actually keep mine in a dark glass dropper bottle. The dark glass prevents light from oxidizing the oils. You can find the dark dropper bottle here.
DIY Makeup Remover Recipe
You will need:
- Scant 2 oz. jojoba oil (or use more if you have a bigger jar)
- 1capsule of non-GMO vitamin E(Technically, this is optional but extremely recommended)
- Optional: 3 drops of soothing essential oil (I use carrot seed essential oil)
- Dark glass dropper bottle for storage, such as this one
Here’s what to do:
- Fill the glass jar about 3/4 of the way with thejojoba oil. Prick the vitamin E capsule with a needle or the tip of a sharp knife. Squeeze the contents of the capsule into the jar. Place the lid on the jar and shake well to combine.
- When you are ready to remove your makeup, use about 1/2 teaspoon of your DIY Makeup Remover. Gently massage it onto your face, especially the eye area. It removes mascara like a charm, just be sure you use enough to fully saturate the eye area. Then, gently wipe off the oil with a cotton pador damp washcloth. Voila, makeup all gone!
- Cleanse your face with the Honey Cleansing Method or a gentle facial cleanser.

The oil you have linked to your carrot essential oil is not an essential oil it’s a carrier oil. I would be very cautious using a true essential oil in your eyes.

Thanks for a fab post! I definitely love the Leven Rose Jojoba Oil that you have listed in your original blog post. The Desert Essences one is in a clear plastic bottle, which I’m not as fond of.

Would replacing the vitamin English capsules with almond oil work just as well? If so, how much of the almond oil should I use?

I have very sensitive eyes – so the ONLY thing I can use to remove my eye makeup is the Green Tea Cleanser from made from earth….everything else makes my eyes water. It also is a great cleanser for the mornings! Def recommend if your eyes are sensitive to soap since this is not soap.

A recent skin issue prompted me to look for a quality facial cleanser with only natural ingredients (no chemicals). I went with the Made from Earth Green Tea Cleanser because it removes makeup (including eye) without irritating my eyes. My face is clean and smooth, no taunt feeling. As stated, only a small amount of cleanser is required. The scent is fresh, spa like botanical.
