Paris Olympics 2024 — Day 10

The second week of the Paris Olympics began with another action-packed day as a number of sport’s biggest names made an appearance on Monday.

On the track, Sweden's pole vaulter Armand Duplantis won gold and then broke the world record with a magnificent attempt of 6.25metres.

American sprinter Noah Lyles returned to the track just one day after he was crowned the fastest man in the world in one of the most thrilling 100m finals in history, winning his 200m heat at the Stade de France.

Lyles' compatriot Valarie Allman took gold in the women's discus, while Britain's Keely Hodgkinson won a dominant gold in the women's 800m as Monday also marked the first appearance of track cycling at the Velodrome National.

There was disappointment for superstar gymnast Simone Biles earlier in the day as she missed out on the chance to add to her incredible haul of seven Olympic gold medals, though she did come away from the women’s floor exercise final, the last gymnastics event of these Games, with a silver.

Mondo Duplantis: Breaking down the biomechanics behind the best-ever pole vaulter

You don’t get to choose your own nickname, but you do get to prove why you were given it.

Armand Duplantis was nicknamed ‘Mondo’ — ‘world’ in Italian — at a young age by a family friend. It is easy to retrofit what was probably just a loving act of childhood innocence, but at 24, Duplantis has conquered the pole vault world numerous times.

In March, he claimed his fourth world title (2022 indoors and outdoors; 2023 outdoors; 2024 indoors) and in June, his fourth European title (outdoors in 2018, 2022 and 2024, and indoors in 2021).

Duplantis is the overwhelming gold medal favourite in Paris. He won in Tokyo three years ago. Out-jump everyone and he will be the first man to retain the pole vault Olympic title since Bob Richards (the United States) in 1956.

Duplantis is to pole vaulting what Usain Bolt was to sprinting; Michael Phelps to swimming; Simone Biles to gymnastics. It is a Duplantis dynasty. Read more below.

Track: Keely Hodgkinson the clear class act of the field

Paris Olympics 2024 live updates (17)

Keely Hodgkinson made it look easy. She took the lead after the first 300 meters. Then at the 500-meter mark, she turned it up a notch. The real contenders followed her, everyone else dropped back. But she still clearly had so much left in the tank.

By the time she finished the final turn, and went into her kick, it was a wrap. Nobody was catching her. Hodgkinson won her first gold medal with a time of 1:56.72. Ethiopia’s Tsige Duguma won silver with a personal-best time of 1:57.15. Kenya’s Mary Moraa finished in 1:57.52 to take bronze.

USA’s Juliette Whittaker, in her first-ever final, finished seventh at 1:58.50. She was the only American to make the final.

This is Hodgkinson’s first major international championship, having won silver in the Tokyo Games and in both the 2022 and 2023 World Championships. It came without her main competition in the 800 meters.

America’s Athing Mu, who fell at the U.S. Olympic trials, didn’t qualify for the Olympics. It robbed the event of a truly competitive final as, it turns out, Hodgkinson with no equal. She was the clear class act of the field.

Soccer: Les Bleus end up triumphant

Egypt's players are slumped to the turf and have a bronze-medal game against Morocco to offer some consolation once the dust settles but it's French football icon Thierry Henry and his gifted team which will go for gold in four days.

France had so many standout performers tonight: from Mateta and Olise to the wonderful Kilian Sildillia and Loic Bade in defence. Substitute Desire Doue made a strong case for inclusion in the starting line-up against Spain too.

Exciting see-saw contest in Lyon which finishes with Les Bleus triumphant.

It's all over - the hosts France are into the final against Spain on Friday.

In the first, Vaast beat Peruvian Alonso Correa with a score of 10.96 to 9.60, before Medina was defeated by Australia's Jack Robinson, 12.33 to 6.33.

Robinson and Vaast will face off in the final.

Paris Olympics 2024 live updates (35)

It's almost certainly the hosts into the gold medal match now after France's brilliant super-sub Desire Doue charges into the area, is knocked over, and the ball finds its way back to Michael Olise, who calmly steers it into the net.

Might have been a pen on Doue but it doesn't matter now.

That Crystal Palace connection does the business again! 3-1 to France.

Soccer: Egyptians losing their discipline

The Egyptians are starting to lose their control here.

Sub Ziad Kamal scythes down Michael Olise and is shown a yellow card, prompting a throng of Egyptian players to confront the ref.

A couple of French players get involved and Mateta tumbles theatrically to the turf as he is shoved.

Rogerio Micale needs to cool his players down at the break. They're only a goal behind and although the odds are stacked against them with 10 men, they will be finished if they lose another.

It's nearly three for France as Alexandre Lacazette is denied for the umpteenth time tonight by a brilliant defensive block. France are in the ascendancy now.

They're finding space everywhere with the extra man and Egypt's brave effort looks like it may be in vain as we approach the extra-time break.

Lyles wins 200m heat after 2a.m. run for girlfriend

Paris Olympics 2024 live updates (48)

Anyone who was hoping for some humility from Noah Lyles will appreciate the story he told after easily winning his heat in the first round of the men’s 200 meters.

Hours after he had the world abuzz from his dramatic win in the men’s 100 meters, Lyles was making another run for his girlfriend. Jamaican sprinter Junelle Bromfield left her spikes at their massage therapist's Airbnb, which Lyles said is next to the Olympic village.

He was on his way from the massage therapist back to the village when she asked him to pick up her bag with the spikes. Of course he did. His reward for the greatest moment of his professional life was carrying his bag, her bag “and some toiletries” to the Olympic village, walking gingerly to preserve his spent legs. At 2 a.m.

“Here I am,” Lyles said with a smile, feigning exasperation. “Olympic champion in the 100 meters, waddling to my girlfriend’s room with all this stuff. I’m a good boyfriend.” To be fair, she was scheduled to run in the first round of the women’s 400 meters at about noon on Monday. Lyles wasn’t scheduled to run until 9 p.m.

She finished third in her heat and qualified for the semifinals. Lyles was unaffected. He won his heat in a smooth 20.19 seconds. Though it was only the sixth-fastest time of the first round, it did nothing to dismiss his claims he won’t be beaten in the event.

“That was just kind of getting the legs moving, Lyles said. It’s been quite the 24 hours for Lyles, who snatched the spotlight of these Olympics. But with his main event still to go, Lyles said he didn’t do much to celebrate.

“I peed in a cup. Did media. Got a massage,” said Lyles, who took part in the medal ceremony at the end of the night’s festivities. “I watched a few videos. I watched Total Running Projections. I’m a big fan of the YouTube channel. I watched… people playing video games. Then I fell asleep.”

But he did watch the race and re-live his legendary moment. Last night. This morning. Multiple times throughout the day.

“When I first saw it,” he said, “I was like, ‘Ah, I really was in last place.”

Lyles said it wasn’t that he got out slow. Looking at the data, he is convinced the rest of the field just had amazing starts. He said his splits over the first 60 meters were good. But what happened to put him over the top was a goal of his he finally reached. He’s been looking for a particular time on one of his 10-meter split.

More drama here in the opening period of extra time after the defender who almost gave away a penalty, Omar Fayed, is then sent off for a second yellow card for a lunging tackle on a French player.

Egypt down to 10 men.

It means if Egypt reached the gold medal match, Fayed would be unable to play.

Soccer: Into extra time between France and Egypt

Paris Olympics 2024 live updates (74)

It'll be extra time in this edgy - and now controversial - semi-final with the teams still deadlocked after France were denied a strong penalty claim deep in added time of the second half.

Thierry Henry will now try and use that anger and injustice swirling around the ground to motivate his players.

Egypt, for their part, have certainly ridden their luck but they've done well to be in this game and withstand huge periods of French pressure after they had gone ahead.

Soccer analysis: Egypt very lucky

Wow! Honduran referee Hector Sorto has called it as "no penalty" to a chorus of boos from most of the fans here in Lyon.

It seemed a clear handball with arms in an unnatural position but the ref says Loic Bade's push caused the defender to put his arms in the air. Dubious.

Egypt, whose coach Micale was booked during all of that, have got very lucky there.

The Egypt defender was trying to win a free-kick.

3x3 Basketball: Germany defeats Spain in gold-medal game

Paris Olympics 2024 live updates (92)

The 3x3 women's gold-medal game was everything you could have asked for, drama, the highs and lows. Germany, who only lost one game in Paris (against Australia), came back to take down Spain and earn gold.

Germany didn't compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and never finished higher than fifth in the six World Cups they played in since 2012. But as of Monday night, they are the best 3x3 team in the world.

It didn't come without adversity. Germany started off on fire, taking a quick 3-0 lead, but Spain fired back and led from the 7:58 mark until the final 30 seconds.

Sonja Greinacher, who dominated the semi-final game with 11 points and only missed one shot, came up big in the final and hit a huge two-pointer to give Germany its first lead since the 8:23 mark.

All four of Germany's players scored at least four points, including 20-year-old and Oregon transfer Elisa Mevius, who played excellent defense by coming up with key steals, and forced two late-game offensive fouls.

A year ago at Siena, Mevius was second in the country in total steals at 135, and she played a key role in Germany earning the gold in Paris.

Paris Olympics 2024 live updates (97)

Finally, after an intense period of pressure, France are level.

It's Jean-Philippe Mateta, their saviour in the quarter-final against Argentina, who keeps his cool to make it three goals in three games. And it's an equaliser made in South London, with Michael Olise, formerly of Selhurst Park (now at Bayern Munich), who slips in his recent Crystal Palace team-mate to make it 1-1.

Thierry Henry has just set off along the touchline like Noah Lyles in celebration.
